last month on the Algerian war of independence, which is in KPFA's

Subject: Wednesday, 7 PM, KPFA: Battle of Algiers: Manual for
War on Terror or Text Book for Liberation Movements
On this week's program, we present an incredible 40th
anniversary Battle of Algiers 3-CD package featuring a
digitalized version of this classic film, which has
revolutionized political cinema and continues to have
unexpected political reverberations 40 years after its
initial release. Among the dozen or so features
included in this package are interviews of filmmakers
influenced by this seminal film, such as Oliver Stone,
Spike Lee, Mira Neir, etc..., as well as a special
documentary narrated by Edward Said on the importance
of this movie, and interviews with surviving Algerian
militants and French military officers from the actual
battle that the movie was based on. There is also a
powerful interview with former American "Terrorism
Czar", Richard Clarke, on the parallels between
Algeria's war of independence and today's so-called
War on Terrorism and the lessons to be gleaned from
this groundbreaking film. Clarke is also the author of
"Against All Enemies?, a book critical of the Bush
administration's anti-terror policy.

On this week?s program, we bring you Algerian-born Hunter College
anthropology and History Professor, Marnia Lazreg, who is scheduled to
give a lecture at 340 Stephens Hall on the campus of UC Berkeley at
3:30 PM on Friday, April 21. Dr. Lazreg will talk to us about the current
movement in France of neo-conservative historical revisionism regarding a
dark chapter of French history: the colonial era in Algeria and the bloody
seven-year war that brought an end to it, relating this movement to the
current international climate of renewed, overt western imperialism in the
Middle East.
