Old P.S. 64, 605 East
9th Street: GVSHP joined more than 100 people at a
Landmarks Preservation Commission hearing on Tuesday in support of
landmark designation for the venerable former P.S. 64/Charas-El Bohio
Cultural Center at 605 East 9th Street in the East Village. Last
year, GVSHP joined East Village community groups, Community Board #3,
and elected officials in successfully opposing an attempt by the owner
to demolish part of the historic building and skirt the law to
construct a 19-story ?dorm-for-hire? on the site (see www.gvshp.org/BSAletter.htm). Now the owner is seeking to
strip the building of its distinctive ornament in what seems to be an
attempt to stave off proposed landmark designation. GVSHP feels
that it is critical that this building be landmarked, not only because
of its extraordinary significance, but so that the City shows that
attempts to vandalize buildings to avoid landmark designation will not
be rewarded (see GVSHP?s testimony at www.gvshp.org/documents/Charastest.pdf).
