Re: [NewPacifica] Time Mag Cover Story: Global Warming

Yes, further confirmation that the MSM are paying serious attention to
Global Warming. At this point, there's no question they've passed the
"tipping point" on the issue, as I suggested back in January when
both the NY Times and the Washington Post ran major front page
stories on the same Sunday. Since then, 60 Minutes has done two
first-rate segments -- one in February was called "Global Warning",
and 2 weeks ago they did a whole piece on James Hansen, the
outspoken climate scientist who NASA tried to muzzle. And for the
past week ABC News has been running global warming stories all
over the place, under the heading, "HOT ZONE: The Reality and
Risk of Global Warming". ABC's Bill Blakemore -- who some may
remember was one of the tiny handful of network correspondents
who really did his job as a journalist during the first Gulf War --
has taken on the role of lead reporter on the "global warming beat".

The really key change in all of this reporting is that they are now using
very pointed language to make it clear to the public that there is, in fact,
an overwhelming scientific concensus on the issue -- and on the urgent
need to take real steps to deal with it before it's irreversible. And they're
no longer giving equal time to the bullshit from the oil industry and their
political mouthpieces -- instead, they've made a point of exposing the
cynical strategy of deliberately confusing the public with the supposed
"scientific uncertainties".

So, basically, the catastrophic tidal surge of Katrina has brought about
a sea-change in reporting on global warming.
