Jim seems stuck in the times of the Russian Revolution when middle class meant CEO types or owners of Corporate Conglomerates. Today's middle class, rapidly being reduced, includes white collar workers like my overworked kids. A Trotskyist acquaintance, when I asked who were today's proletarians, answered, "Anyone who would have trouble paying the rent if he/she lost his/her job." Perhaps the Trotskyists of today are more with it in post industrial America than old Marxist-Leninists like Jim.
