Yesterday, I was fortunate enough to catch a riveting interview on KPFA's "Bay Native Circle" program. During the second half hour the guest was a Native Hawaiian activist and filmmaker named Anne Keala Kelly, who is working on a documentary film about the unbelievable array of US military areas that have been imposed on the Hawai'ian islands, and the ongoing resistance of the Hawai'ian people. The audio for the program is archived at: http://www.kpfa.org/archives/index.php?arch=12860 Hawai'i may have attained statehood, but in reality it is very much a colony, largely dominated by the pervasive US military presence. If you thought it was just Pearl Harbor and Hickham AFB, you couldn't be more wrong. The list of bases, forts, stations and training facilities goes on and on so long that your eyes grow weary just reading them all. But the only way to really appreciate the full extent of the lands taken over for military use is to take a good look at this webpage: http://www.nohohewa.com/map where you will see a whole series of large maps of all of the Hawai'ian islands, covered with brightly-colored splotches; and that endless list of military areas, broken down island by island, along with brief summaries of pertinent facts. The point of all this -- beyond waking people up to what's going on there -- is that Ms. Kelly needs to pull in more financial support in order to complete the documentary. I gather that she's already done a great deal of filming, and is now working on the editing, etc. There's more info on the website http://www.nohohewa.com including some short video clips that need the QuickTime player. Below I have pasted an intro to the film and a profile of filmmaker Anne Keala Kelly, taken from the website. Please pass this on to other people and lists. Craig Gingold (near) Midpines CA ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Noho Hewa Ma Hawai'i Nei: The Wrongful Occupation of Hawai'i Noho Hewa Ma Hawai'i Nei is a 60-minute documentary about the historic and contemporary presence of the US Military in Hawai'i. As such, it is a mo'olelo -- a story that chronicles how the American war machine took hold in Hawai'i, and how to the detriment of the Hawaiian people it has expanded throughout the Pacific. From America's involvement in the 1893 overthrow of the Hawaiian monarchy, to the illegitimate annexation of that neutral, independent nation state, Noho Hewa Ma Hawai'i Nei examines the consequences of America's ongoing military build-up in Hawai'i. FACTS ABOUT THE MILITARY IN HAWAII: - Hawai'i is one of the most militarized groups of islands in the world. - The military controls over 20% of all land in the Hawaiian Island chain. - The military population makes up over 11% of the state of Hawai'i, as opposed to less than 1% of the U.S. population. - The U.S. Army secretly tested chemical, biological, and deadly nerve gas agents in Hawai'i watershed/forest reserve areas, facts repeatedly denied but later confirmed. - Currently 7.1 million live rounds of various weapons are fired annually on sacred Hawaiian lands at the Pohakuloa Training Area (PTA) on the Big Island of Hawai'i. - More than 400 square miles (250,000 acres) on Hawai'i Island may contain live arms and other military toxins and should be considered military hazard areas. - In 1995, there were 405 toxic sites in 122 military facilities statewide. Keala has made two 28-minute guerilla documentaries to rally community resistance against condemnation of Hawaiian land for the benefit of wealthy condo owners, and a 10-minute educational piece for American Friends Service Committee used to educate and motivate community-wide resistance to the upcoming US Army expansion and the Stryker Brigade. Keala is a regular contributor to Independent Native News and to Free Speech Radio News -- two national programs that air Monday through Friday on Public Radio and the Internet. She was awarded twice in 2004 by the Native American Journalists Association for articles she wrote about the push to federally recognize Hawaiians as Native Americans, and how Alaska oil lobbyists have influenced Native Hawaiian politics to secure support for drilling in the ANWR. She received her MFA in Film Production from the UCLA School of Film and Television in 1998, and is Writer, Director, Editor and Producer of Noho Hewa Ma Hawai'i Nei. ======================================================= *** [==> If you're not part of the solution... you're part of the problem <==] *** New Pacifica Working Group http://www.egroups.com/group/NewPacifica 'Save Our Stations!'
