[NewPacifica] Re: CELL PHONE HAZARDS - THE EVIDENCE IS IN

I have held lots of lab rats in my hands, but rarely if ever in my
lap. And when I held them, I held them securely, paws not anywhere
near me. They tend to scratch when feeling unsteady, and I wouldn't
want rat scratches anywhere near my lap.

After 2 or 3 years of frequently handling them and inhaling their dust
I developed a severe allergy (as many rat-lab people do).

I'd say this fellow must have studied biology through WBAI, but he's
from Sweden:
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
 A TWO-MINUTE CALL
After only two minutes of cellphone exposure, the blood-brain barrier
fails, allowing proteins to enter the brain that can cause nerve
damage. Molecules such as proteins and toxins can pass out of the
blood, while the phone is switched on, and enter the brain. We need to
bear in mind diseases such as MS and Alzheimer's are linked to
proteins being found in the brain. So, adds Leif Salford of Lund
University in Sweden, is Parkinson's disease. [Electronics Australia
Magazine Feb/00]
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

As for "proteins being found in the brain", I should point out that
there are probably a few hundred proteins in the brain that are
already well studied, and without them we'd be dead.

And, of course, the aberrant proteins of Alzheimer's dementia are
home-grown, developed by brain cells that have a long history of
handling oxidative metabolism poorly; and re-uptake of a product of
the brain's own dopaminergic activity may be doing most of the
damage in Parkinsonism. So far as I know, the etiology of MS is still
rather mysterious, but some autoimmune processes triggered by
exogenous sources (through a BBB leak) is a possibility, but I doubt
anyone has shown leaking of the BBB due to one two-minute cell-phone call.

I will say, however, that the question of long-term bad effects from
cell-phone exposure is not so easily answered. There are some studies
which tend to support the idea of increased risk with increased use,
and some reasonable speculations on the possible processes that might
allow such an effect.

As for the earth's magnetic field, this is perhaps analogous to
"background radioactivity". We have adapted to live with both of
these environmental phenomena, but that does not mean that
radioactivity is harmless, nor that fluctuations in natural
geomagnetic forces are without influence on physiology.
