why bother about pacifica? why indeed.
Tue Jun 26, 2007 7:50PM
there are likely as many answers to that one as there are formerly involved persons who remain interested, but are no longer involved.
although no poll has been done--one really isn't doable--it would surprise no one to learn that many of those persons stay in touch with each other. although they have no interest in being involved again, from time to time, the question of what pacific might have been comes up.
at some point--however close or distant--whoever or whatever groups pick up the pieces of pacifica, many not greatly dissimilar questions will be asked yet again.
irrespective of whatever legal form or entity the network survives in--presuming it does--the next time around, those addressing the questions will almost certainly not make the same mistakes. [one would hope that they'll make different mistakes, but that is another converation.]
why not the same mistakes?
1. substantially different people.
2. new listeners: persons who do not despise their local communities, their country, their culture or themselves.
3. adult supervision.
discussion:
1. those involved will be diffferent. the true-believer + red-diaper loons are dying off. they will be gone soon. the aging kiddie cocktail anarchists are also going away. they are among the grimmest lifeforms on earth. some of them will even end up as republican county chairwomen. of the remaining jihadist loons, some will burn out, some will mellow + some will end up in a turkish prison. too bad.
NB: those of you who are headed for prison, please be sure carol spooner + dave adelson have your correct addresses so that they can come visit you on pacifica holy days, e.g., anniversay of the day the hijackers were overthrown.
2. pacifica listeners who have a brain + a job other than being an irritant to the world, have been leaving in droves for years. they will be a long time coming back, if they ever do. these were the people who believed that the greatest diversity of all is the diversity ideas. they refuse to be litmus-tested. if the goings-on at kpfk are representative, they are not welcome at pacifica now.
3. whatever court or administrative agency ends up with the matter will likely not allow more of same. they'll pull the plug before they re-assign licenses to a similar group of the walking dead. perhaps more importantly, so will the pacifica insurance companies, if there are any left.
. . . . .
the broadcast licenses, however, devalued as they may be, may well survive. somewhere out there in the world is a group of 20 or 30-yr olds who could not care less about the discreditted surrogate politico-religions of the fratricidal brain dead left + their endless bickering. they know full well that so-called progressives as currently constituted are little more than backward-looking, bitter burnouts who define themselves in terms of what they are against.
understandably, this new group--whoever they are--do care about the potential of new radio, even given that it is changing as we speak.
it will be interesting to see how well, how quickly + how innovatively they'll approach the matter.
recap: pacifica does not resolve conflict. it creates it. as currently constituted, that is all it can do. it has become a repository of self-selecting clerics. the dreary endless conflict is partly a function of the fundamentalist loons who currently undermine it + partly a function of its own enabling history. to the extent it survives, most of the current crew will almost certainly not be a part of whatever emerges. [that in itself suggests there may be a god, but that is a conversation for another time.]
that's why some still bother.
a glass of bubbly, eh?
