Mumia Abu-Jamal's appeal for a rehearing in the Third Circuit was
denied: the case will go to the Supreme Court, but it proves, as the
lead counsel reminds us, that racism is still alive and well in this
country, and especially in Philadelphia and the Third Circuit.

If you are not familiar with this case, you might want to read up on
it at the links below. In essence, the Philadelphia prosecutor
eliminated people of color from the original jury, and in fact the
office was notorious for its video instructing new prosecutors on how
to keep women and people of color, especially, off juries. As I
always point out to my students, the case of Mumia Abu-Jamal is a
textbook example of how to corrupt every single stage of a criminal
case, from destroying the evidence at the crime scene to ratifying
illegal judicial decisions up and down the line. But this denial is
especially egregious. Clearly the judiciary cannot afford a trial
that would reveal the wrongdoing of officials at every level.
