[NewPacifica] Re: Skrewin' the KPFT pooch

I listened to that whole exchange and I gotta say Edwin was really off the wall.
    Not only did he refuse to listen to people's very calm and reasonable explanations but he also spent his moment vilifying a number of key activists rather than focusing on the facts that the Houston LAB was considering a managerial candidate who thinks NPR programming is appropriate for Pacifica and who refers to the listeners as a "market". He also missed that there is a member of the LAB who thinks Aaron Glantz and Free Speech Radio News are conspiring to take over KPFT's non-existent news department.
    On transparency versus privacy;
    I suggested that there should be a web-site set up where all candidates for the GM position should post a statement similar to what is on their applications and that the listeners should be invited to review the statements and offer feedback to the LAB. This would not be thoroughly "public" but would make the process open to the listeners as it should be.
    On NPR at Pacifica;
    Most of us despise what NPR has become yet by some small margin we prefer it to the other networks and Faux News. The truth is that many affiliates also carry both Democracy Now and some NPR programming and would be hard pressed to drop "Fresh Air" ( by the way; I loved the send-up of Terry Gross on the cartoon strip Dykes to Watch Out For). WMNF even carries D-Now, FSRN and PNN and NPR news plus Fresh Air. The question is crucial at KPFT largely because the discussion was about adding  NPR where it had never been before. Why fall in to that trap? I don't fault the affiliates who already carry NPR. They're stuck for the moment and as NPR deteriorates and moves further to the ideological right / pentagon spokesplatform, etc. those stations will find themselves having to dump out posts of well-boiled frogs and it will be costly At KPFT the suggestion of adding NPR is like presenting the station and its listeners with pot of water that's already warm and saying " bring your frogs now, we're waiting.

In the name of "democratization" and "transparency", many wrongs will
be committed, all for the sake of making certain things happen to the
benefit of a few, rather than to the whole.
