I scanned the long article but in passing noted ? black centering? and
framing perspectives, Diop on the ancient ?Black African? Egyptians, 1980 and
nascent contemporary Afrocentricism - as a reaction to Reaganism and its
aftermath.

On 19 Feb 2008, Emmett Abati Doe wrote (after quoting Birden):

The charge that something is "intellectually and culturally biased" or
"academic-snobbish" may quickly be recognized by readers as typical
anti-intellectual dismissal of something well-written. The charge
that it is "bull-shit," however, implies that it is erroneous and/or
dishonest. Mr. Doe has provided no specifics in rebuttal.
Ms. Birden summarized her contribution to the thread with the comment
"Most groups have slang terms for people who have risen above the
ordinary achievement level of their group, and I'm sure we can all
recite some of them." This invited readers to search their own
experience for validation of her assertion.
Though my own search was not precisely along the path intended in the
invitation, I have noticed that many in Pacifica self-identify as
members of particular cultural groups and use that association to
justify their arguments for special privilege. This is necessarily a
rationale for granting power and influence to individuals or groups on
some basis other than experience, ability, or merit. Among the terms
occasionally used in advancing such arguments against merit are
"elitist" and "anti-democratic," and the not uncommon result is the
award of a position to a relatively incompetent candidate in
preference to a superior applicant. In Pacifica, this may occur not
just in management searches but also in committee assignments,
personnel advancement, and program scheduling.
Having thus confirmed by my own observation the core assertion of Ms.
Birden, and having no contrary example from Mr. Doe to expose an error
in her reasoning, I am intellectually, culturally, and academically
compelled to grant her a superior status in my ranking of this
particular exchange.
But I'm an intellectual snob, so what do I know?
