Re: [NewPacifica] Re: Back in the real world, there actually is a peace movement.

The reason there is not huge demonstrations all across the United States is
because there is no draft.

The invasion of Iraq is fought by the children of the poorest of the poor. The
ones who wouldn't make it in college; at least the colleges we used to have.
One young girl I'm working with was learning, from her Freshman English how to
write effective email. No John Steinbeck. No Flannery O'Connor. No Gabriel
Garcia Marquez. Nor more importantly no James Baldwin. Just a flimsy excuse for
a higher education. Her English "workbook" is thin and she's allowed to write
in the blanks the answer to questions that don't challenge.

If there were a draft we see the ones who stayed in school out in large
numbers.

Of course, like the time before, as soon as the danger of war is over, it will
be the time for a new "Me Generation." "Don't rock the boat. Don't rock the
boat o-ver. Don't rock the boat. Don't tip the boat o-ver."

If you believe in peace and justice; support the draft.

Hi Craig:

Sorry I was vague.

One of the things that I've noticed for a long time is that today's
peace groups aren't very effective. Street demonstrations a couple
times a year is about all that most of us seem to muster, but that's
not making much of an impact.

But one group that has accomplished a lot and continues to grow is the
International Crises Group. They call themselves "a do tank" as
opposed to "a think tank." I think they are a very good model for
international efforts to confront the world's conflicts and try to
bring real-time research, attention and high-level advocacy to address
those conflicts. In 2005, they celebrated their ten year anniversay.
A lot of folks in Pacifica may not be familiar with their work and
that's what I was sharing:

Thanks,
Nalini
