For those who missed it, the program was hosted by LSB chair Richard Phelps, and included Lavarne Williams and Stan [Smith? -- sorry] as well as long-time Pacifica activist Les Radke (the new election coordinator). The two things I want to mention that were discussed during the hour-long program are both issues that were raised by callers during the latter part of the hour. First, a caller named Lisa made a heartfelt and cogently articulated appeal for everybody involved with the station, the LSB, program council, etc. to make a serious effort to get beyond the hostility and refusal to acknowledge other points of view that afflicts so much of what they do. Amen to that. Second, long-time labor activist/journalist Steve Zeltser underscored the fact that KPFA -- unlike KPFK & WBAI -- does not have a REGULARLY SCHEDULED LABOR PROGRAM. I rarely hear the morning show these days, so I don't know if David Bacon still comes on for a weekly half-hour segment. Of course, there's a whole long history on this very sore point, which goes back to Zeltser having been barred from the station because of his anti-management activism during the 90's -- when the "labor slot" was handed to Bacon. Anyway, KPFA's program council recently voted to bar the Labor Collective from submitting a proposal for such a program for a full year because of some sort of "misbehavior" by one unidentified member of the collective. No details were given on that subject. However, LSB member Joe Wanzala introduced a motion which, as I gather, would prohibit the program council from taking decisions with respect to allegations of improper behavior, instead of evaluating proposals on their substance. Whatever the personal issues (and histories) that are involved here, it seems to me that KPFA damn well ought to have a REGULAR, FREE-STANDING LABOR SHOW. And for what it's worth, I have always had a lot of respect for Steve Zeltser -- so I'd be delighted to hear him on the air every month -- or every WEEK for that matter -- instead of being relegated to a token appearance for some sort of Labor Day special.
