Excuse me, Wendy. Are you saying that the Spanish Inquisition was
a big waste of money? Where would the Catholic Church be today if
they hadn't undertaken that valiant -- and by all accounts, successful --
effort to purify the church of all vestiges of heresy and corruption.
Furthermore, you are overlooking the inherent dramatic potential of
these proceedings. Just think of it! -- LIVE, gavel-to-gavel broadcasts
of every twist and turn-of-the-screw. All anchored by Pacifica's own
Larry Bensky (who else?). Come on admit it -- those Iran-Contra
hearings were just plain boring. But the Pacifica Star Chamber hearings
will have listeners *riveted* to their radios! Think of the money that
will pour in -- the taped highlights of all those tearful confessions will
be far more satisfying than Days of Our Lives could ever hope to be.
And we could offer all sorts of premiums -- everything from miniature
cattle-prod tie-clips (and earings) to caps and tee-shirts that say
"Whoever Said Free Speech is Free?". Maybe someone could get
George Clooney to donate 100 copies of "Good Night and Good Luck."
And if we're *really* lucky, perhaps a generous benefactor will make
available one of the few extant copies of the Malleus Maleficarum
(the unjustly scorned witch-hunting manual of the Inquisition).
Clearly, the possibilities are limitless.
I'm sure there are additional benefits that I haven't even thought of.
So I hope you will reconsider your views, Wendy. It seems to me
that public expressions of dissent at this delicate time are unwise
and are best kept to oneself as they are bound to hurt the morale
of our troops... I mean listeners.
And finally -- as a long-time listener/supporter (3-plus decades)
I want to salute and commend the board of Pacifica for not taking
the easy way out on this. We all know they could have given us
some lame excuse like, "There's too much urgent business that
needs our immediate attention." I only hope that they have the
collective perspicacity to be looking ahead, beyond the horizon
of these hearings, to the NEXT set of issues that can serve as
grounds for a follow-on round of hearings. If I may be so bold --
I would like to suggest that the personal dietary inclinations of
our Pacifica directors is long-overdue for an inquisitory probe.
(This would offer the added benefit of actual *physical purges*
along with the more mundane political variety.)
Ever so sincerely,
Craig Gingold

As a PNB member for 2 of the last 3 years, I have a pretty good idea of
how much all of your activities cost the foundation, as well as the
accomplishments Pacifica has to show for those expenses. <snip>
To put it plainly: You all do not have the time or the resources to
investigate each other. Our listener members simply can't afford it.
These days they have LOTS of other choices, and it is getting harder and
harder to convince them that Pacifica is the place that they should donate.
We listeners need you to insure the financial soundness of the
organization, to give us some VISION and guidance on where we are going
next to help save the world - that's what we elected you to do... Our
donations to Pacifica depend on this trust.
I don't understand how PUAC would work - would you depose people? That
sounds really expensive. Can I, as a board member of KPFT, go on the
air and tell people at fund drive time that the money that they give to
the station will go to depositions to help determine who amongst us is
racist?
No, I can't, and in this world-getting-weirder it is harder to get the
money we need for Pacifica to survive. Our good work against racism
happens on the radio. The radio!
I urge you all to vote to rescind the PUAC comittee. It will not solve
any of the problems of racism or sexism and will create extreme problems
with our listeners. This listener is very interested in hearing from
you regarding radio of all colors. Radio.
