[NewPacifica] Robert Fisk on the Holocaust and general discouragement

You know, or some of you may know, I've been reading German WWII etc.
history, most recently a book on the German police. This scares the hell
out of me, because change the names, places and ethnicities and it sounds
scarily contemporary.

Like the building of the fence around the Warsaw Ghetto compared with
building the Wall in Israel and trying to build one at the US border. Hey,
Lorraine, you're with the wrong group this time, Muslim, which with Arabs
and Hispanics are the current targets.

And the way the German police troops treated the occupied Poles, Jews and
even priests. Shades of Guantanamo and Abu Graib and the West Bank and
Gaza. The author of the police book thinks they behaved that way because of
indoctrinization, but I fear it's something the military just does to guys
as soon as you hand them a gun and dress them in uniforms. I'm the
granddaughter of a German-American pacifist, remember.

The German left split before the Nazis got in. Like they're doing now,
hypnotising themselves with 9/11 conspiracy theories and other junk. Where
can we find leaders to lead us out of this crap? Especially when nobody
seems able to think anymore. Are these historical cycles built into the
human race?

Discouraged Avis

P.S. A little empathy on the part of persons devoted to occupation might
help.
